DIY Jeans-to-Skinny Jeans

Have you worn out your last pair of skinny jeans and have only straight/flair style jeans for back to school? I know that my own Thunder-Thighs have worn unfortunate holes in all my favorite skinny jeans, so I used those worn out skinny jeans to turn some straight leg hand-me down jeans into DIY skinnies.

Materials: One pair of straight-leg/flaired jeans that fit and one pair of skinny jeans that fit (I realize that you might not have any skinny jeans, but you can borrow. These won't get messed up). One Sharpie, pair of scissors, sewing machine, seam ripper and about a dozen or so pins.

It is also nice to have a computer, but I trust that you do if you are reading this.

Before you start it is good to have a space to work in. A large clear patch of floorspace works well. Also, put the scissors out of the way. You will not need them for a while, and don't tempt yourself with them.

Step One: Turn on Pandora

Step, the Second: Turn both pairs of jeans inside out.

Step III: Layer skinny jeans over straight leg jeans. Stop to tell Pandora that just because you love Taylor Swift doesn't mean you want to hear country music

Step 4: Use Sharpie to outline the difference between the two pairs of jeans. Make sure you get up as far as is reasonable. You usually won't get all the way up to the top, but you'll probably get above the knee.

Step 10/2: Use pins to ensure that the your lines don't shift. This will keep your seams on the sides of your legs, instead of slanted across them.

Step Six: Use your sewing machine to sew along the lines, starting at the bottom and sewing up until you run off the edge of the pants. Use a sturdy stitch that won't come out and pull out pins as you go.

Step 7th: Stop to deal with sewing machine error. Curse Singer.

Step Eight: Finish sewing. You might think that now is the time to get the scissors. However, that is wrong. First, try on the jeans, still inside out, and make sure that they fit right. If they are for some reason too tight, the seam ripper will be needed to start over, too loose can be fixed by another row of stitches. Just make sure that you try them on again, after that.

Step 3-Squared: Tell Pandora you are still listening.

Step Dix: Finally, after you are satisfied with the fit, get your scissors and cut off the excess material, leaving about a quarter inch between the stitches and the cut.

Step 11: Try on your fabulous creation. Enjoy the compliments you receive.
